Ahmed Billad Combines Academic Background with Digital Journalism
ERIGAVO, SOMALIA — Somali journalist Ahmed Billad is among a growing number of media professionals combining academic education with digital journalism to report on issues affecting local communities.
Since entering journalism in 2023, Billad has worked to build a reporting style centered on factual news coverage, community engagement, and public-interest storytelling. His work has increasingly reached audiences through digital platforms, where online media continues to play a larger role in news distribution across Somalia.
In 2024, he established Billad Media, a digital media platform that publishes news, interviews, and public awareness content for Somali-speaking audiences.
Education Supporting Journalism
Before pursuing journalism full-time, Billad completed higher education in different academic fields. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Information and Communication from East Africa University in 2018 and later completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing at Sanaag University in 2020.
He is currently studying for a Master’s Degree in Peace and Conflict Management at Abareso Tech, an area that complements his interest in social development, peacebuilding, and community affairs.
Billad says his educational background has helped him better understand the social and humanitarian issues that often appear in his reporting.
Community-Based Journalism
Much of Billad’s reporting focuses on local developments, education, health awareness, humanitarian challenges, and youth activities.
His work frequently involves visiting communities, interviewing residents, and documenting events that affect everyday life in the Sanaag region and other parts of Somalia.
He has also reported on drought conditions, community development initiatives, and public awareness campaigns, producing content for audiences seeking local news and information.
Recognition and Public Engagement
Billad’s journalism has received recognition from community organizations, including Damal Women’s Organization and Yagleel Media, which awarded him certificates of appreciation for his contribution to public awareness and media activities.
His work has also attracted media attention, including an interview conducted by journalist Warsame Kaafi, where he discussed a book he authored and his experiences in journalism.
Digital Reach
Through Billad Media, Billad distributes news and interviews across TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube, publishing content on a regular basis.
His digital audience has continued to grow, with thousands of followers engaging with news reports, interviews, and community-focused programs.
Future Goals
Looking ahead, Billad says he plans to continue expanding his journalism by producing factual, balanced, and community-oriented reporting.
He also aims to strengthen Billad Media’s presence as a digital platform covering issues of public interest while encouraging informed discussion among Somali audiences.
